思い当たるふし
C・S・ルイスは、映画になった小説『ナルニア国物語』の作者です。神学者でもあり、キリスト教に関する本も数多く執筆しました。その中でも、Mere Christianity という本が非常に有名で、英語の礼拝でよく引用されます。
今日の礼拝でも、その本の一部が引用されました。
日本語訳『キリスト教の真髄』は持ってないので、こちらで抄訳：
善人になればなるほど、自分の中にある悪がはっきりと分かるようになります。悪人になればなるほど、自分の悪にますます気づかなくなります。ちょっとした悪人は、自分があまり良くない人間だと分かっていますが、とてつもない悪人は、自分は問題ないと思っています。
これは、よく考えれば分かることです。眠りを理解するのは起きている時であり、寝ている時ではありません。算数のミスに気づくのは、頭がちゃんと回転している時ですが、まちがえて解いている時には、ミスには気づきません。お酒に酔った状態が理解できるのはシラフの時であり、酔っぱらっている時ではありません。善人は、善悪の両方を知っています。悪人は、どちらも分かっていません。

“When a man is getting better he understands more and more clearly the evil that is still left in him. When a man is getting worse he understands his own badness less and less. A moderately bad man knows he is not very good: a thoroughly bad man thinks he is all right. This is common sense, really. You understand sleep when you are awake, not while you are sleeping. You can see mistakes in arithmetic when your mind is working properly: while you are making them you cannot see them. You can understand the nature of drunkenness when you are sober, not when you are drunk. Good people know about both good and evil: bad people do not know about either.”
